Uhuru Torch

Located within the grounds of Dar es Salaam's Mnazi Mmoja Park, this monument was built in 1961 to commemorate the Independence of Tanganyika. The Uhuru Torch symbolizes the Freedom Torch that was placed at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro at the time that independence was declared. Over the years, the torch has become nothing short of an iconic national symbol, appearing on the reverse-side of the Tanzanian shilling coin.
