Samburu National Park 'Untamed Wilderness, Secluded Splendor'

Samburu National Park is located about five hours north of Nairobi, forms a unit with Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserve. They are all three on the Ewaso Nyiro river. In the north the landscape is dry and the savanna broken by low mountain slopes.

In this area the Samburu, a nomadic people that is related to the Masai. If the opportunity arises, you can visit Samburu and acquainted with their way of life. Even tough the Samburu people is hard to survive here. The area around the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River (Samburu name for “brown water”) is much greener on the other hand and here you’ll also find many different species.

The reserve is known for a number of species that are rare or elsewhere, such as the netgiraffe, Grevy’s zebra, giraffe, gazelle and oryx Beisa. In the northern part, where the river through rocky hills and a narrow plain flows, many leopards live. You can also find more than 400 species of birds including the Somali ostrich (with the blue neck). Of course you can also lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants come, and just maybe, an endangered black rhino
